From the lush mountains of Colombia, specifically in the department of Magdalena,, lies the path of Cherua, located in the district of Palmor, in the municipality of Ciénaga. It si here that Adriano de Jesus Montoya has carved out a life centered around coffee cultivation. Adriano has owned his farm for a decade, a property that spans 15 hectares, of whic he dedicates 3 solely to coffee cultivation. These land is situated at an altitude of 1929 meters above sea level, house roughly 10000 coffee plants from the Castillo variety, averaging three years of age. The harvesting process for this plants typically takes places in the second half of the year, mainly concentrating between October an January. Adriano, with meticulous dedication, follows a pre-fermentation of 25 hours. Subsequently, the harvested cherries are depulped in the afternoons, letting them ferment for 3 days. After this period, they are washed and set to dry under a solar method in canopies, which can last between 600 to 700 hours. Despite the excellent quality of his work, the farm does not hold formal certifications like Organic, FT, UTZ or RFA. However Adriano implements sustainable practices, such as manual weed clearing and avoiding the use of chemicals. Additionally, with an average rainfall of 2000mm, the climate aids in the plants optimal growth. Adriano is not only the farms manager, but also personally oversees the coffee cultivation. He’s family also plays a pivotal role on the farm: While Yulida, his wife, handles domestic chores, Adriano focuses on filed tasks, such as harvesting and depulping. Adriano’s commitment to his community is evident. He employs 4 local residents and colaborates in beneficial activities for everyone, like road cleaning and organizing lighting. His farm is a haven of biodiversity, sheltering flora as guamo, banana, laurel, higueron, eucalyptus, nettle and blackberry. Furthermore, it is home for various fauna species, including neque, armadillo, guagua, fox, martejas and howler monkey. Coffee Cultivation isn’t merely a job for Adriano, it’s his family livelihood. His bond with coffee began 25 years ago and his farm was inherited from his father, becoming a family legacy. Adriano and his family continue to work with passion and dedication, ensuring each cup of coffee produced reflects their love and commitment to the land and their coffee-growing tradition.
